# Mega means how many zeros in 1

## Conversion from MWh to kWh - this is how it works

Sometimes it is necessary to convert MWh into kWh. If you know what the two abbreviations stand for, it is very easy to convert them. You don't even need a calculator.

### Knowledge required for conversion

• Before you start converting MWh into kWh, you should know what it is actually about.
• MWh means megawatt hours, kWh kilowatt hours.
• You need the watt-hours in everyday life to measure power consumption.
• If you want to know how much electricity you are using, you can read how much electricity your household or the device is using on a meter in the house or on a measuring device that you connect to a specific household appliance.
• You can also use this number to find out about electricity prices or the total amount you have to pay for your electricity each year. This also gives you the opportunity to compare electricity prices and electricity providers with one another.
• Kilowatt hours should be the measure for most households. MWh, i.e. megawatt hours, are mainly used for companies or apartment buildings or are of interest to electricity companies. For example, if you specify the output of a power plant, it would be better in MWh, because MWh is a larger unit than kWh.

### Calculation example MWh in kWh

• When converting MWh into kWh, what generally means for converting "mega" into "kilo" applies. "Mega" stands for a million, "kilo" for a thousand, so MWh is a million watt hours and kWh is a thousand watt hours.
• Accordingly, to convert MWh to kWh, you have to multiply the value by 1000, because a million is a thousand times a thousand.
• So if you want to convert 2.5 MWh, the result is: 2.5 * 1000 = 2500. 2.5 MWh therefore correspond to 2500 kWh. Likewise 0.04 MWh = 40 kWh.
• Conversely, the conversion works the same way. If kWh are given and you want to calculate the MWh, simply divide the value by 1000.
• In order to save a lot of zeros or decimal places, you should convert depending on the size of the number into MWh or kWh.
