Conversion from MWh to kWh - this is how it works

Sometimes it is necessary to convert MWh into kWh. If you know what the two abbreviations stand for, it is very easy to convert them. You don't even need a calculator.

Calculation example MWh in kWh

  • When converting MWh into kWh, what generally means for converting "mega" into "kilo" applies. "Mega" stands for a million, "kilo" for a thousand, so MWh is a million watt hours and kWh is a thousand watt hours.
  • Accordingly, to convert MWh to kWh, you have to multiply the value by 1000, because a million is a thousand times a thousand.
  • So if you want to convert 2.5 MWh, the result is: 2.5 * 1000 = 2500. 2.5 MWh therefore correspond to 2500 kWh. Likewise 0.04 MWh = 40 kWh.
  • Conversely, the conversion works the same way. If kWh are given and you want to calculate the MWh, simply divide the value by 1000.
  • In order to save a lot of zeros or decimal places, you should convert depending on the size of the number into MWh or kWh.
