How to hang ready-made exterior siding materials

Fixing the mirror on the wall: installation methods

Glass is a very capricious material. At the same time, however, it turns out to be very popular in the design of interiors. Especially in the form of a product like a mirror.

It is difficult to overestimate the great possibilities that people offer besides their immediate purpose - mirror image for us - mirror. They contribute to the visual expansion of the room, help to create a special "diffuse" light in the rooms, and so on. Therefore, it is very important to understand how to properly place the mirror on the selected surface.

particularities

Before moving on to the methods of assembling the mirrors with our own hands, let's dig a little bit into the peculiarities of the surface to which they are to be attached.

  • concrete - the most common material in most building structures. To work on concrete you need a hammer drill and before you glue anything to a concrete wall it needs to be primed.
  • Drywall - The material is not very durable and cannot withstand heavy loads or repairs. Therefore, you need to carefully monitor the weight of the product: the weight of the mirror cloth should not be more than 20 kg, and you will also need special fittings.

On average, the weight of a mirror is between 7 and 15 kg, depending on its thickness. This should be taken into account when choosing the type of fastening and the type of fittings.

How and what to attach?

Hidden fasteners require some effort. In this case, you can do without nails and not spoil the wall. It is best to stick the product on a plasterboard surface. Nails can be used for brick walls.

So the mirror can be glued or hung.

To glue

Sticker mirror plates - a pretty simple process. You can insert it in a number of different ways.

The advantage of this group of methods will be the lack of visible fixings on the surface of the mirror, the ability to use the product without a frame, the possibility of interior design with the help of small patterns in the form of butterflies, flowers, polygons and others.

Gluing is a relatively easy way, ideal for small items.

At the same time, this method of increasing the mirror in its various uses has three serious drawbacks:

  1. In many cases, the glued product cannot be removed from the wall - it will have to be broken.
  2. The surface on which you plan to place your mirror should be flat and stable. And if the first one is easy to check, then it is quite difficult to predict that a wall (especially straight erected or newly plastered) will not shrink, which will lead to the destruction of the product.
  3. It is possible to glue far from all surfaces and not in all rooms. B. not on a tile, and temperature and humidity fluctuations in the bathroom or in the kitchen can destroy the adhesive layer.

For work you need to use a special mirror glue - it does not contain acids that could spoil the amalgam, so before using any other glue, the back of the product should be treated with a sealant. Neutral silicone sealant can be used in place of glue.

When bonding in the bathroom, we recommend using a special silicone sealant for aquariums, which is a little more expensive than usual, but contains fungicidal additives in its composition and was originally intended for use in a damp environment.

Prepare, level and degrease the surface. If you are sticking the product on a vertical surface, make sure you prep the supports so the canvas stays in place before the glue hardens. In this capacity, you can use boards or several screws that are temporarily screwed to the lower edge of the marking so that the mirror canvas rests on them.

The adhesive can also be combined with several mounting tape strips that serve the same purpose and additionally secure the web before the adhesive hardens.

If you want to glue the fabric to the front door or cabinet door, it is better to lay it horizontally and remove it from the hinges - it is more convenient, you do not need to use props, and the mirror sheet will not move precisely until the glue fully cures is.

You can't stick the canvas to the wallpaper - guaranteed that it will stick to the wall, no. Therefore, it is necessary to clean the wall from wallpaper, other unstable coatings and primed.

Apply the adhesive strips, leaving a space of 8-12 centimeters between them, depending on the size of the canvas. Glue can also be applied over the back of your mirror in "serpentine" or dotted lines. Try to avoid the edge - the glue can come out messy and it will be difficult to remove from the wall later.

Make sure you put the markup on the wall where you want to glue the mirror so it will be easier for you to navigate. Use a level to check that it is flat.

Attach the mirror to the wall while focusing on the markup. Be careful: the glue will set quickly and you may not have time to correct the position if you turn the mirror upside down. Hold the mirror in place for a few minutes, squeeze it, then replace the supports - they can be removed in a day or two.

It is impossible to glue the mirror on the tile: therefore, usually when installing the tile in the bathroom, a free section of the wall is adjusted in advance to the size of the future mirror. If you haven't done this, you'll need to remove the tile or choose another way to attach the mirror to the wall. To compensate for the difference in height, if the thickness of the tile and the mirror are different (most often the mirror is thinner), an additional layer of plaster is placed under the product, or a sheet of waterproof plasterboard is installed between it and the wall. Joints can be treated with glue or plumbing sealant.

If the work surface is large, you need to take extra precautions. So, the surface of the wall below should be very well aligned, and a special film should be glued to the surface of the mirror: now if it breaks, it will not be punished with serious injuries.

Mirror walls of several large canvases are mounted with a small gap between the canvases so that the mirrors do not break during installation or with a slight shrinkage of the walls during use.

Small mirrors can be glued without glue, just with double-sided tape, the advantage of this procedure is that the foam base of the tape compensates to some extent for both the unevenness of the surface under the mirror and its possible movement. This type of bonding also allows the mirror to be dismantled.

However, the assembly line must be wide, of high quality and designed for high loads. The amalgam of the mirror must withstand the same load: some cheap models may become detached during operation, and there is a risk of damage during installation. These mirrors are generally not recommended for gluing.

As before, you need to prepare the surface first - clean the dust and wipe it with alcohol for degreasing. The tape is evenly stuck to the surface, but it should not be laid horizontally or horizontally around the perimeter or strips - the pieces of tape are laid vertically in a checkerboard pattern. You can add a few extra strips closer to the top edge of the mirror.

Hang

If the mirror is without a frame, you can use different types of fittings that are available in stores: brackets, profiles, brackets, clips and strips, with the help of them the mirror can be mounted both close to the wall, and with the distance be placed - with a distance of 5 mm to several centimeters between it and the wall. This can be useful when the surface under the mirror is uneven and cannot be leveled.

There are two types of mirror fasteners: through and not through.

With push-through installation, dowels are installed through holes made directly in the mirror. If your mirror already comes with special holes or the store offers the service of drilling glass, all you need to do is install the dowels in the wall and screw the mirror on.

Usually the dowel for fixing mirrors (and not only) consists of:

  1. Sleeves made of hard plastic, embedded in the wall, stretched and fastened when the screw is screwed into the wall.
  2. screw
  3. Special clamping plates that fit between glass and wall, glass and screw head and prevent the mirror from being damaged when tightened.
  4. Decorative caps made of metal or plastic cover the heads of the screws.

Hanging the canvas with the help of dowels on the ceramic tile, wall, covered with wood or pasted over with PVC sheets, make sure that the fastening is insufficient for the tile - you need to go deeper into the base wall, for which longer dowels are used , or it is better to remove the wall of the cover in the place where you plan to mount the mirror.

If you can screw in a screw (wooden furniture) directly on the surface, you can do without the sleeve under the dowel.

If the wall is fragile (chipboard, drywall), use special dowels.

If there are no ready-made holes in the product, but the method of execution suits you and you want to make them yourself, you will need a special diamond drill on glass, a slow drill and a little patience. Before drilling, fix the canvas to a flat, preferably wooden surface so that it does not move, degrease the surface with alcohol and mark the places where you will drill the holes with a marker.

The product may crack if heated during the drilling process. To avoid this, you need to work at a low speed - from 250 to 1000 revolutions of the drill per minute. To prevent the plate from cracking, which has heated up during the drilling process, shape the "cup" of clay and mark it with water or turpentine. The liquid will cool the glass and delay the glass dust generated during operation .

If you plan to assemble the product with discontinuous fasteners, the algorithm for installing all types of fasteners is approximately the same. The larger and heavier the canvas, the more mounts must be used.

Pay special attention to the lower fastener - it must withstand the greatest load.

As a rule, fastening elements are installed from below - at a distance of 2-3 centimeters from the supposed mirror angle. And on the sides so that the mirror stayed in this "pocket" under its own weight. It is possible to install fittings with fasteners attached at the top and bottom, and the mirror "embedded" on the side.

The lower elements are placed strictly horizontally on the marking, the side elements are usually such that the mirror on one side merges freely into their grooves. Usually it is 2-3 mm from the intended side edge of the mirror, but the distance depends on the specific type and style of fittings chosen. Make sure that the mirror cannot fall out with a maximum displacement to one side.

Sometimes, for reliability, a decorative profile is used as the lower element of the furniture, which can be combined with any other method of fastening the upper edge - with brackets or with dowels.

If you want to add extra durability to the mirror canvas, you can glue it to a sheet of plywood or chipboard: such a measure not only prevents the mirror from breaking due to careless pressure, but also makes it thicker, take this into account when installing it separately .

When hanging a mirror, stick adhesive strips on the corners on the back: they are sold in stores, often they are stuck, for example, on furniture legs. With this precaution, the mirror will not "hang" in the brackets.

If you're installing a mirror in the bathroom or kitchen, treat the back and glass ends with plumbing sealant.

Mirrors that are attached to the frame are often supplied with rings or loops by the manufacturer. All you have to do is mount a suitable partner on the wall, for example a hook. You can also purchase hinges or hanging plates from the store.

A mirror in a heavy wooden frame with no prefabricated fastenings can be attached to the wall via the top edge using two slats approximately 50 by 20 mm in cross-section with longitudinal cuts at 45 degrees that interlock in a "lock".

One of them is mounted horizontally on the wall, the other - on the back of the frame at a height of about 4/5 of the mirror (at some distance from the top edge). The mirror is held in the "lock" under its own weight.

When installing wall models, consider the features of the room. So, in the children's room, even on small mirrors, it is worth putting a splinter film in order to avoid injury.

In small and dark rooms, install a mirror on a wall perpendicular to the window. Horizontally positioned mirrors visually expand the space, while vertical mirrors increase it. Before installing a mirror, make sure it is reflected.
