How to fly over drywall squeegees

Great cover for the drainpipe

Since the washbasin is always the center of a bathroom, it inevitably attracts attention when entering. No matter how beautiful the model, in most cases you can look away using the drainpipe, especially if it is used to store cleaning cloths. Our examples show that there is another way.

The fulcrum of the washstand column is an easy-to-build frame made of square strips and rounded MDF panels. It serves as the basic model for all pipe hiding places. Whichever version you choose, whether from a bamboo roller blind, a metal blind or covered with decorative film, they are all inexpensive. The materials are available in the hardware store for 10 to 15 euros. The solution with the fly curtain made of threads (from 10 euros in furniture stores) has an additional benefit. Behind the panel, unlike the other three, you have storage space for cleaning cloths and cleaning products.

Dimensions for the bezel

The dimensions of the construction result from the height of the underside of the washbasin and the position of the corner valves and the drainage pipe.

Instructions: covers for the drainpipe

Step 1/7: cut the shelf boards

The shelves for the base are cut from MDF according to the template.

Step 2/7: glue the square strips

For the back wall we glued two square strips to an MDF board and fixed them with a screw clamp.

Step 3/7: countersink the hole

Holes are drilled into the 75 cm long aluminum bar with a 4 mm drill (markings can be punched!). Then lower the hole (use drill stand).

Step 4/7: shape the aluminum bar

With the help of the shelf, our aluminum bar is brought into shape. Fix with a screw clamp after the half arch shape for better handling.

Step 5/7: paint the frame

Paint the frame twice with acrylic varnish, with an intermediate sanding.

Step 6/7: screw on plastic feet

Screw on the shelves and the plastic feet (20 x 10 mm). The feet are attached with stainless steel screws. If water forms under the shelf, it cannot rust.

Step 7/7: underside of the sink

You must take into account the shape of the underside of the sink when you make the template for the metal arch and the two MDF floors.

Building a pipe hiding place: One construction - many variants

  • Bamboo roller blind: The bamboo model has a Japanese touch. To shorten the roller blind, roll it up tightly, wrap it tightly in several places with painter's tape. The roller blind with the foxtail can be cut to size in a saw box. Then glue the mat with hot glue on the inside of the aluminum bracket - warm it up with a hairdryer so that it sticks better. Slide the rack under the sink.
  • Metal blind: For this glossy version, cut the threads of the blind and cut the individual slats to the appropriate length with a special cutting device (around 8 euros in the hardware store). In contrast to scissors, there are no sharp edges here. Fasten the slats with self-adhesive Velcro tape on the inside of the aluminum bracket.
  • Adhesive film: It is best to use a glazing film as a solid surface (around 13 euros / sqm). There is a little trick to stick the decorative film (d-c-fix, around 6 euros) bubble-free: spray the glazing film with soapy water, then remove the protective paper from the decorative film and smooth it with the squeegee from the center to the edge.
  • Fly curtain: So that the funny curtain made of threads gets enough opacity, we take it twice. To do this, iron a hem tape on the upper edge of the fabric, remove the paper after it has cooled down and fold the lower side of the thread curtain upwards and iron it in place. Then cut to the length of the floor. Fix with Velcro on the aluminum bracket.

Pipe cover with PVC sheathing

Anyone who is grumpy about the morning will immediately get in a good mood with this lively idea. Especially when you know how expensive vanity units are that you can buy ready-made. Because this solution is a price hit. The PVC hard foam board (50 x 100 cm) costs only 10 euros. These waterproof panels are available in various sizes and many colors in hardware stores. They are easy to process and shape with a hot air tool - see instructions below.

The narrow strips are warmed up and then, when they are warm, fitted inside the cladding at the very end. If necessary, fix with hot glue. Both shelves (around 8 euros) for towels and cream pots are pushed into the panel and hold without screwing. And if the sewer pipe is blocked - pull the frame forward and everything is within reach.

These dimensions are only guidelines. This applies to this as well as to the other constructions. The shelves are not flush with the PVC plate so that there is space (2 cm) for the cover strips.

Instructions: PVC cover for the drain pipe

Step 1/4: cut the panels

The rigid foam board made of PVC (3 mm thick) can be cut very easily with a cutter. The length of the narrow white stripes results from the depth of the shelves.

Step 2/4: bend the material

So that the material can curve well, it should first fix all the parts to be brought into shape on the frame with glue clamps. Then carefully heat the PVC from both sides with the hot air gun at medium temperature. The clamps can be removed after a waiting period of five minutes.

Step 3/4: screw on the strips

Once all PVC parts have been brought into the correct shape, they are screwed onto the square strips of the construction. To cover the screws, you can either glue on an aluminum strip or a strip of white PVC.

Step 4/4: hanger edge

The 50 cm long storage shelves made of coated chipboard are provided with hanger edging on the edges.
