Sheet metal cutting - Corten steel

Corten steel

Corten steel is a weatherproof structural steel and is made up of the addition of copper, chrome and nickel. A chemical barrier layer continuously forms on the material surface under the influence of the weather. This protects the components from further corrosion and creates the familiar patina in warm brown tones. Corten steel has a very long life expectancy even without painting and is also completely recyclable.

We would like to expressly point out that our sheet metal blanks made of Corten steel are delivered "brightly rolled". The formation of the patina begins after 2 to 3 weeks and is only completed after 1.5 to 3 years. The alternation between wet and dry weather is important in the formation of the barrier layer. If there are surface areas that are not exposed to this type of weather, no rust patina will form in these areas. It should also be noted that rainwater running off the Corten steel can lead to rust stains on stone floors.

Due to the good color matching, Corten steel can also be found in the garden area. For example, the use of Corten steel as a snail fence in the form of a lawn edge or as plant and tree rings is popular.

Typical areas of application

  • Custody
  • Privacy screen
  • Decorative components
  • Snail fence

Notes on welding

If you want to join two components made of Corten steel, welding is also suitable. The selection of a suitable welding wire plays a special role here. "Normal" welding wire corrodes in a shorter time in combination with the weatherproof structural steel. It is therefore essential to use a special welding wire for Corten steel.

Processing information

We would like to draw your attention to possible traces of processing on the surface of the material. These can arise during the manufacture of our Corten steel articles. You can find a detailed description in our blog entry.
