How to use the function keys on your Mac

You can use the top row of keys on your Apple keyboard as controls for built-in Mac functions or as standard function keys.

Control functions on your Mac

Use the standard function keys

The standard function keys are assigned different functions depending on the app and the keyboard shortcuts you have set up. Some apps have their own keyboard shortcuts that you can customize.

To use the standard function keys, hold down the "Function" (Fn) or "Globe" key while pressing a function key pressed. For example, if you press Fn and F12 (speaker icon), the action assigned to the F12 key takes place instead of increasing the speaker volume.

If your keyboard doesn't have an Fn key, hold down the Ctrl key while pressing a function key.

Change the default behavior of the function keys

If you want to use the top row of keys as standard function keys without holding down the Fn key, proceed as follows:

  1. Choose the Apple menu ()> System Preferences.
  2. Click on "Keyboard".
  3. Select "Use the F1, F2 etc. keys as standard function keys".

If the option "Use the F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" is not displayed

If you don't see the option to "Use the F1, F2, and so on as the default function keys", you may be using a non-Apple keyboard. Such keyboards may require a utility to change the keyboard functions. Contact your keyboard manufacturer for more information.
