1. The times of prayer

The Koran prescribes the obligatory prayer for the believer at five specific times of the day. A distinction is made between the actual compulsory prayers (fard), which must by no means be omitted, from the so-called sunna prayers, which precede or follow the fard prayers. Nafl prayers are completely voluntary prayers. Witr is a binding (wajib) prayer that is performed after the night prayer and consists of three prayer sections. All prayers consist of a certain number of prayer sections (rak‘a, see below). The following table shows the times of prayer, the number of sections (rak‘a) in each prayer, and the type of prayer (fard, sunna, nafl, wajib).

The times of prayer are measured as follows:

Tomorrow 2 rakat (fajr): This prayer is said between the onset of dawn and sunrise.
Noon 4 rakat (dsuhr): This prayer is performed between the time the sun is at its highest and the afternoon prayer begins.
Afternoon 4 rakat (‘asr): This prayer is performed between noon and evening, around the last third.
Evening 3 rakat (maghrib): This prayer is offered between sunset and the end of dusk.
Night 4 rakat (‘ischa): This prayer is performed after dusk has ended, from dusk to before dawn.

It is not permissible to offer prayers at the following three times:
- during sunrise
- during sunset
- while the sun is at the highest point in the sky

No fard prayer should be said outside of its actual time. If a fard prayer could not be prayed in time for inevitable reasons, it must be made up at the earliest possible time.
