Violence in Pakistan: outcry over rape of mother and daughter

The rapes of a mother and her four-year-old daughter sparked an outcry in Pakistan. Protesters marched through the streets of the city of Kashmore in southern Sindh province after the violent crime, a police spokesman said on Friday.

The rapes were reported to the police on Wednesday. A suspect has already been arrested and another man is still being sought. The mother and daughter were raped and tortured after the woman from the metropolis of Karachi was lured to the city of Kashmore with a job offer. The four-year-old is still being treated in the hospital.

Pakistan's Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari spoke on Twitter of a terrible rape case and "bestial mindset". She called for strict enforcement of the law. Activists, politicians and celebrities condemned the act.

In September, the rape of a woman on an expressway near the eastern city of Lahore had caused a national outcry. At the time, statements by a police chief who made the woman jointly responsible for the act of violence were particularly indignant. (dpa)
