Water is a blue liquid. It can be found in almost every biome where it forms lakes of different sizes. The oceans at the edges of the map are made up of water. It is less common in deserts, and completely absent in the underworld (it disappears when you make it flow down). Water is not as inert as lava or honey. In each biome, water takes on a different shade of blue (the color can be changed by fountains sold by the Witch DoctorNPC). From a depth at which the first lava lakes appear, you can no longer find any water.

Candles, torches and burning arrows do not shine under water, but glow sticks and some other luminous objects do.

When a player is underwater, an indicator will appear showing how long they can stay underwater before drowning (if the indicator expires, you will quickly lose life until you are dead). A player counts as "under water" as soon as the water reaches one pixel above his eyes.

If a player's feet are at least a block deep in water, they will be slowed down greatly. Certain accessories or potions can accelerate the player in liquids, allow him to swim, or even make it possible to walk on the surface. By nature, players cannot swim.

In expert mode, the chilled status effect slows the player down as soon as he enters water in a tundra.

Just like lava and honey, water serves as a small manufacturing object. It works just like the other two liquids, to use it you just have to stand nearby. Crafting something with water does not lower the water level.

  • Flippers allow the player to swim by repeatedly jumping up in the water.
  • Kill potatoes allow the player to breathe underwater.
  • Snorkels allow the player to breathe a little below the surface of the water and increase the breath meters.
  • Diving helmets increase the breath reading.
  • Diving equipment increases the breath meter and makes swimming possible.
  • Neptune's shell allows the player to breathe and swim underwater.
  • The player can walk on water with the help of water running potion, lava boots, obsidian water boots and water boots.
  • Pumps and baskets can move water.
  • Fin potion or Fischron's wings make it possible to move in water at normal speed.
  • The jellyfish necklace, jellyfish diving gear, and arctic diving gear give off light underwater.

  • Subterranean water lakes are often easy to find even in the dark thanks to the jellyfish that spawn in them.

  • Desktop 1.3.4: Water is now dynamic and has a setting to be more or less dynamic.
  • Desktop 1.2.4: Activated blocks no longer make water disappear above them when the world is charging.
  • Desktop 1.2.3:
    • Water now flows a little faster. 5-10%.
    • Fixed a bug where moving very large quantities of water could leave some water floating.
    • Fixed issue where you cannot jump while in reverse gravity in water.
    • Walking underwater no longer causes the choke status effect to flicker.

    • When water touches half a block, it creates a waterfall.
    • Water changes color depending on which biome it is in or when there is a blood moon.
  • Desktop 1.1: Water is now in a second "layer" behind the placeable blocks, which means it can no longer be removed by placing blocks on top. Liquids trapped by blocks can only disappear after the world has been restarted.
