What is castor oil in Malay
Castor oil for the skin
Castor oil has been known for thousands of years because of its nourishing properties. Even the ancient Egyptians used the oil of the miracle tree not only as an effective laxative, but also for cosmetic purposes.
Castor oil is an all-round care oil that can be used without any problems. However, it should be stored out of the reach of children because castor oil has a laxative effect.

Very important: castor oil is non-toxic and you can use it to care for your skin and hair. The seeds of the miracle tree (Rizinus communis) contain the poisonous ricin. During the production of castor oil, however, this toxic protein is completely separated out.
Effects of castor oil on the skin
Castor oil is a great nourishing oil for your skin if used correctly. The special thing about this oil: it is non-comedogenic and is particularly suitable for cleansing the face. Comedogenicity describes whether an oil tends to clog the skin pores and thus favor blackheads (comedones). This is not the case with castor oil, because on a scale of 1-5 it is grade 1.
Castor oil quickly penetrates the lower layers of the skin. It should be able to stimulate collagen formation and thus tighten the skin a little. If you tend to have dry skin or dry areas of skin, it makes sense to mix the chewy oil with another care oil. Because too much castor oil also dries out the skin. (Sounds paradoxical, because castor oil also provides moisture.)
A mixture of castor oil and almond oil nourishes with many valuable ingredients and makes the skin supple.
Castor oil has also always been used to support wound healing and inflammatory skin diseases. The antibacterial effect was valued especially in times before modern medicine. But even today you can still benefit from castor oil, as it soothes small inflammations well. This is noticeable when treating inflamed pimples.
Ingredients for the skin
Castor oil is rich in tocopherol (vitamin E). This substance is also found in conventional anti-aging products. It is often recommended against the signs of aging of the skin and is supposed to prevent the formation of wrinkles. Vitamin E is an antioxidant and can therefore protect the skin against oxidation caused by everyday influences such as UV radiation. In addition, tocopherol is a radical scavenger and is also supposed to delay natural skin aging in this way.
Free radicals are created in body cells and increasingly damage them over time. This is countered by antioxidants that are absorbed through food and skin care. They protect the cells from the effects of oxidation. This means here that the skin appears younger for longer.
In addition to vitamins, castor oil contains two important fatty acids that care for and support your skin. The ricinoleic acid it contains is one of the most important ingredients and makes castor oil unique. It can reduce inflammation and has an antibacterial effect.
Linoleic acid is an essential fatty acid - the body cannot make it on its own. It locks in moisture in the skin and prevents it from drying out.
Apply castor oil to the skin
The oil of the miracle tree can be used for many problems and ailments of the skin. It is suitable as part of the evening care routine and cleanses the skin
However, expectations of the oil also have to be scaled down. Castor oil is not a cure for acne, psoriasis or neurodermatitis.
Such an effect is often ascribed to the oil. But unlike evening primrose oil, castor oil doesn't contain a lot of gamma-linolenic acid. In recent years, the effectiveness of GLA in the treatment of inflammatory skin diseases has been confirmed, which is why evening primrose oil or borage oil are preferred here.
Castor oil is not one of the oils that can be used arbitrarily. Depending on the skin type, it should be mixed. But it can be applied straight to the eyebrows and eyelashes, for example. As part of a hair treatment, the scalp also benefits from the oil.
Castor oil for pimples
With cosmetic problems such as pimples or blackheads, the use of castor oil can be quite successful. This applies first of all to the containment of minor inflammations and includes use as a cleansing facial oil.
The cause of pimples is clogging of the pores in the skin and the resulting inflammation. In contrast to other oils, castor oil also gets into the deeper layers of the skin without clogging the pores. The ingredients can be easily absorbed here. The oil doesn't clog the pores.
However, too much castor oil can also dry out the skin. It should therefore only be used in conjunction with other oils as part of daily facial care.
Castor oil for pimple marks
Healed pimples can leave scars. You can also use castor oil against this problem. In the best case scenario, you apply it to the affected area before a scar has formed. In this way you support the healing process and can prevent the development of noticeable pimple marks.
But even if the treatment of blemishes has already left scars, castor oil can help you. It makes the skin supple and ensures that the scar tissue adapts more quickly to the surrounding skin area.
Castor oil for pigment spots
So-called age spots are a cosmetic problem. This is a pigment disorder that often develops on the hands at an advanced age. These pigment spots appear more often in women than in men.
Age and pigment spots can be caused by UV radiation, but also by medication. In the process, excessive amounts of pigments accumulate and cause dark spots on the skin.
If you have pigment spots, you can try to reverse the color by regularly applying castor oil. The deeply penetrating castor oil can soften and dissolve the melanin if used for a long time. Of course, you should still always pay attention to good sun protection, because UV radiation can cause skin cancer, for example. Castor oil does not provide UV protection.
Here you can find out more about sun protection with oil.
Castor oil against dark circles
Castor oil also has a similar effect if you have dark circles under the eyes. The dark color under the eyes is made worse by lack of sleep or smoking. A massage with castor oil is beneficial and regenerative for the tissue under the eyes.
The blood circulation is stimulated by light tapping and the regeneration of skin and tissue is accelerated.
Soften the cornea with castor oil
Calluses on the feet can be treated with castor oil. The oil can be used to soften the cornea so that it can be removed more easily the following day. To do this, you should apply the undiluted oil directly to the cornea and then leave it on for about 12 hours. Now you can remove the callus as usual.
You can also use castor oil against dry and flaky skin in general, such as those often found on the elbows.
Castor oil for warts
Castor oil is said to be effective against warts. Warts are caused by a viral infection and are primarily a cosmic problem. They are particularly common on the hands and feet. Treatment can be carried out with special icing sprays. An alternative to this are Home remedies for warts, which also includes cold-pressed castor oil.
Analogous to essential tea tree oil, castor oil is also a proven home remedy for warts. It is a little easier to use because it does not cause skin irritation.
You can of course also make a mixture against warts yourself by mixing castor oil with tea tree oil.
Here you can find out more about tea tree oil against warts.
Which Castor Oil For The Skin?
Choosing the right oil is important when using castor oil for skin care. There are basically two types of castor oil: refined and cold-pressed oil.
Both oils do not contain ricin and only differ slightly in price. With regard to the ingredients, however, there are serious differences. The refined oil should only be used as a laxative, because the refining works with heat, which destroys some of the ingredients.
Cold-pressed (i.e. unrefined) castor oil is much more suitable for external use.
Castor oils from organic and conventional cultivation are also commercially available. In the conventional cultivation of the miracle tree, pesticides are usually used. Residues of it can still be contained in the castor oil.
With an oil from controlled organic cultivation, you can be relatively sure that these substances are not used in the cultivation and are therefore not present in the later oil.
If you want to use castor oil externally, it is worth investing in a natural and organically produced oil.
Cleanse skin with castor oil
Castor oil is a care oil that is very suitable for cleansing the face. This oil has proven itself in the so-called Oil-Cleansing-Method. Especially if you have oily skin, you should give this method a try. The best time is in the evening, because the excess oil can be absorbed well overnight.
If you are unsure which skin type you are, you can do our skin type test.
For facial cleansing with castor oil, you should mix it with another oil that suits your skin. The light but nourishing jojoba oil is very suitable. The fragrant almond oil is a little more nourishing, but it is more greasy. The amount of castor oil should not be more than a third as it can dry out the skin.
Even very dehydrated skin can increase the formation of pimples, as the skin releases more sebum as a result.
The advantage of this cleaning method is the ability of the oil to combine with the sebum. This cleans clogged pores more thoroughly than with water or alcohol. In contrast to cleansing lotions with alcohol, the skin is still not dried out.
You should only use your facial oil with castor oil on affected areas of the skin, as it can dry out a lot.
Experience with castor oil for the skin
You can use castor oil on its own or as part of an oil mixture. We have already explained the advantages of an oil blend for some areas of application. Here is a brief overview of which oils you can combine particularly well with castor oil:
- Jojoba oil is good for blemished and oily skin
- Coconut oil is moisturizing and can be used well as a day care product
- Almond oil is nourishing and makes the skin supple
- Avocado oil nourishes dry skin
In addition, of course, any oil is suitable for a mixture with castor oil. Choose your favorite combination depending on the area of your body and skin type. For a cleaning oil, you should use light oils. A care oil that contains castor oil should have a rich base. Massage the oil mixture in well after cleaning it in the evening. The oil reaches the lower layers of the skin by gently tapping it.
In some cases, you can use castor oil on its own. Then you should always apply it specifically to the affected area of the skin: You can apply it to warts, for example, to accelerate the disappearance of the wart. Castor oil applied neat has also proven its worth in the treatment of calluses. To increase the effect, you can cover the area and let it soak in overnight. You also protect your bed linen in this way. Use a band-aid to cover a wart. When treating the calluses on your feet, you should sleep in socks.
Whether as facial care or against scars - give the oil enough time to take effect. To prevent oily skin and stains on clothing, you should apply the castor oil in the evening. Massage the oil in well and then remove excess oil with a soft cloth. The next day, you should cleanse your face again with a cloth and some warm water. After that, your skin is cared for and ready for the day.
