How to print square brackets in latex

How can I make large protruding brackets fit?

The brackets are related to the math axis (I don't know if it's officially called that ... in English usage they say math axis) centered. Working around this can lead to very strange looking expressions:

In my opinion, the following looks just as unacceptable:

I would rather use (or a similar choice, so, or) and accept that the indices are not or not completely covered by the brackets:

Applied to your example, it looks ugly at first ...

... but this can easily be remedied with additional kerning or spacing via:
