There are a variety of pastes and tablets against worms. But how should you enter this into a feral cat? How many species of worms are there and are they dangerous to humans? Which pastes and tablets help against which worms?

Let's start with the worms first. There are roundworms, hookworms, roundworms and tapeworms that nestle in cats' intestines. There are also the less common lung worms and heartworms. A worm infestation can have different effects on the health of the cat: At first they weaken the animal, but if left untreated, they can also lead to the death of the cat! It should also not be overlooked that various types of worms also attack humans and can lead to severe organ damage!

The infection
Fleas are intermediate hosts for tapeworms! Worm eggs that stick to the fur are inevitably picked up when "cleaning". The cats swallow the infectious eggs, worm larvae or intermediate hosts (e.g. infected mice etc.), or the worm larvae actively penetrate through the skin. The worm eggs are released back into the environment with the faeces of the infected cat. People can become infected through contact with contaminated sand (play box) or dirt, but they can also come into contact with worm eggs through the harmless petting of a cat.

The wormers
There are a wide variety of forms (paste / tablet / neck ampoule) on the market that differ in their application. As a layperson, you can quickly lose track of this, which is why we are going to give you some wormer products with which we have had our own experience and which we can therefore recommend. There are of course other means. You can obtain detailed advice from your veterinarian.

Our tip: Veterinarians always recommend deworming preventively, even if there may be no worm infestation at all. Don't deworm your cat (s) just because a period of time has passed. Since all wormer cures - especially the above-mentioned drugs, which usually work against several types of worms at the same time - can have a considerable (also harmful) influence on the organs of cats, you should use the motto "as little as possible, but as much as necessary "deworm. Deworming is - like a vaccination - a rather violent chemical attack on the cat's organism! If you suspect a worm infestation, we recommend that you take a faecal sample (collective sample over 3 days) of your cat (s) to the veterinarian, who can then examine it for any worm eggs and larvae (if necessary in the laboratory). That only costs a few euros. If worms are actually detected, you can targeted this worm Treat with the wormer that is effective for him, and not with a broad-spectrum wormer. If the cat z. B. slipping your bottom across the floor COULD be an indication of worm infestation, as well as diarrhea or after a flea infestation.

When it comes to deworming feral cats, we've had the very best experiences with Panacur tablets made. The tablet is dissolved in a few drops of water and then simply poured over the wet food. Since it is tasteless, the cat simply eats it - without stress! The Panacur tablets help against most types of worms and also against Giardia, which is why they are unreservedly recommended.

We also use the Milbemax tablets for free-living cats that are no longer that shy. They help against roundworms, hookworms and tapeworms and are very small. They have a break line in the middle so that they can be wrapped in a treat and, if necessary, thrown to the cats. The advantage: You only need to give one tablet.
