Windows 10: Current version and updates in the overview

When Microsoft first presented Windows 10 in September 2014, it was announced at the same time that there would be no new version numbers for Windows. That was also one of the reasons why the successor to Windows 8.1 was not simply called Windows 9. The name Windows 10 remains. Nevertheless, a lot of functions have been added in recent years, the interface and the pre-installed apps have been improved, so that Windows 10 no longer looks the same as it did when it was officially launched in July 2015.

So what is the current Windows 10 version? How do I find out which version of Windows 10 I have? And what innovations have the past Windows 10 updates brought? This article answers these and other questions about the topic.

  2. click on system and then at the bottom left info.
  3. Scroll all the way down.

In the area Windows specifications the installed Windows edition and Windows version displayed. The edition indicates whether Windows 10 Home for private users or Windows 10 Pro for users who need access to a Windows server-based network is installed.

The Windows version indicates the version number of the currently installed update. The names of the version updates are not displayed.

Under Operating system build you can find the exact build number. Even within a large Windows version there are different update statuses, which, however, usually only differ in the corrected errors. Microsoft provides a list of all build numbers with the bug fixes they contain.

Updates are installed automatically

In most cases, you do not need to worry about updates; you will get the latest Windows 10 version automatically sent to your PC a few days after the official release date.

The installation of a six-monthly function update is comparable to a new installation of the operating system and can take over an hour. Therefore, these updates are not installed automatically like security updates, but only after confirmation by the user - ideally at night while the PC is not in use.

Reading tip:Avoid Windows 10 update problems

Only mini-PCs and tablets with a very small SSD do not have enough storage space for the function updates. This problem was probably not considered when developing these devices. Updates are only possible via detours and external storage media.
