About "Meter"
The meter is the base unit for length in the International System of Units (SI) and in other metric systems.
All other units of length in the metric system are derived from the meter (e.g. 1 km = 1,000 m, 1 m = 1,000 mm).
In 1799 the meter was defined as ten millionth of the distance from the North Pole to the equator according to the measurements carried out at that time. For this purpose, a so-called original meter was cast in platinum as a prototype. Since 1983, the meter has been defined as the distance that light travels in 1 / 299,792,458 of a second in a vacuum.
