How to set up two-factor authentication on Snapchat [2FA]

In an age of rampant technological growth and increasing privacy concerns, there is no longer any security. Having a complex, multi-digit password just doesn't cut it anymore. You have to add multiple layers of security to ensure privacy, especially when it comes to your own social media accounts.

Although most apps offer two-factor authentication security, it is usually disabled by default and needs to be enabled manually. This is also the case with Snapchat, one of the most widely used social media apps.

Even if you have nothing to hide, it is better to enable the best security measures that are available to you just in case. Here's how you can set up two-factor authentication for Snapchat.

Set up two-factor authentication for Snapchat

There are a few methods you can use to set up two-factor authentication for Snapchat. Let's look at them one by one so you can choose which one is best for you.

First of all, you need to find the two-factor authentication option in the Snapchat settings. Here's how you can access it.

Open Snapchat and tap your Bitmoji in the top left corner.

Then tap the settings (Gear icon) in the upper right corner.

Here you will find the option “Two-Factor Authentication”. Tap on it.

Tap on Continue.

Method 1: using text code

The first method is basic text verification. When this option is enabled, you will be given a text code that you will need to enter (in addition to your password) to log into your Snapchat account. How to activate it:

On the Two-Factor Authentication Settings page, tap Text verification.

A code will be sent to the mobile number associated with your Snapchat account. Snapchat captures this code and automatically verifies it. If not, enter it manually in the field provided.

This will set up and enable your two-factor authentication, and it will appear with a check mark next to “Text Verification”.

The next time you log in, you will receive a time-based verification code that you will need to enter in order to access your Snapchat account.

Method 2: use an authentication app (automatic)

You have a better level of security if you have an authentication app installed on your phone. Linking an authentication app to your Snapchat account is easy. In our example we are using Microsoft Authenticator, but the process works similarly for most authenticator apps like Google Authenticator or Duo. Here's how to do it.

On the Two-Factor Authentication page, tap Authentication app.

Tap on Set up automatically.

When prompted, tap OK.

When prompted, provide your fingerprint / PIN / pattern to confirm it's you. Your Snapchat account will now be automatically linked to your authentication app (Microsoft Authenticator here). Then tap Snapchat.

Make a note of the one-time password code in your authenticator app.

Now go back to Snapchat and enter the code. Then tap Continue.

You have now set up two-factor authentication automatically using an authentication app.

Method 3: using an authentication app (manually)

There may be times when you need to manually set up two-factor authentication on Snapchat using an authentication app, e.g. B. if the authentication app is installed on another device. To do this, tap Authentication app Option on Snapchat's two-factor authentication page.

Then tap Set up manually.

You will be given a time-based code that you will need to enter into your authentication app.

Now open your authentication app and tap on the three-dot menu and Add account.

To add your account, you may be asked to scan the QR code. However, since we have an alphanumeric code and not a QR code, tap Enter the code manually and do it.

Enter the name of your Snapchat account in the field above. In the box below, enter the code string that is on your Snapchat screen. Then tap Finished.

Your Snapchat account will now be linked to your Authenticator app. Now tap on “Snapchat” in the Authenticator app to find your one-time password code.

You can get your one-time password here.

Now go back to the Snapchat app and enter the verification code that was shown in your Authenticator app. Then tap Continue.

Snapchat's two-factor authentication is now set up.

Method 4: use the recovery code

Finally, you can also use a recovery code in case you ever want to delete your authentication app or log into a new device. This recovery code does not change and is unique to your account. Note that two-factor authentication (any method) must be enabled in order to access your recovery code. On the two-factor authentication page, tap Recovery code.

Tap on to generate.

Your recovery code will now be displayed. Make sure you write it down somewhere for future use.

This is a great way to set up two-factor authentication for Snapchat and give your account an extra layer of security. In addition to a password, you now also have to enter the one-time password, which is sent to you either via text code or via the authentication app. A few extra clicks is a small price to pay for the extra security you get from enabling two-factor authentication. Although there isn't 100% that adds a rock to your privacy.
