What does organic mean?

Organic is becoming more and more popular

More and more people are buying organic products. That is why there are more and more organic supermarkets. There you can buy organic clothing, organic food or organic cosmetics. There is also an organic corner in many normal supermarkets. But what does organic actually mean?

When one speaks of an organic product, it means that the product was produced organically. That means that all raw materials in it are natural. So no artificial substances were added. And the cultivation must also be organic or ecological. With organic products it is important that the soil remains “healthy” despite cultivation. Biological and ecological have the same meaning here.

But how can you be sure that it really is organic where it says organic?

The organic seal

  • The German organic seal

The organic seal has existed in Germany since 2001. It's a small hexagonal sign that says “Bio”. Only manufacturers who adhere to the requirements for organic food can receive the seal. These requirements are contained in the European Organic Regulation. The terms “organic” or “ecological” may only be used on foods if they are actually “organic” or “ecological”. You can therefore rely on the German organic seal.

  • The European organic label

The European organic label has existed since 2007. It was introduced so that you can rely on organic quality in all countries in Europe. The seal is light green and shows a leaf shaped from stars. When you see this seal on food, you can be sure: it really is organic! Although the EU organic seal has replaced the German organic seal, both seals can still be seen on many foods.

What does an organic label guarantee me?

In order to receive an organic seal, a company must meet several criteria:

  • The animals have more space and are not crammed together. They are kept in a species-appropriate manner - chickens, for example, are allowed to scratch the ground outside.
  • No genetic engineering is used.
  • The food is not irradiated.
  • The plants are largely fertilized naturally.
  • Use of certain pesticides.
  • Animals receive feed from organic farming.

How are the organic seals checked?

According to the European organic regulation, organic producers must be inspected once a year. If deficiencies are found during the inspection, the manufacturer is given a deadline until he must have eliminated the error. These controls can also be carried out unannounced. This is to prevent the organic manufacturer from making everything look right just for checking.

Why is organic more expensive?

Organic products are at least 25 percent more expensive than the other products on the market. It always depends: some foods are even twice as expensive as conventional ones. There is of course a reason for this. Organic farmers and organic farms have to meet the many criteria. Animal-friendly husbandry, more complex methods in agriculture, strict controls that also cost money, are just a few examples. Many organic farms produce less, which also increases costs. Because mass-produced goods are always cheaper.
