What does a research paper include?

Are you writing your first major research paper? Are you a little overwhelmed and intimidated? If so, you are not alone! But you don't have to be afraid. Once you understand the process and have a clear picture of the expectations, you will gain a sense of control and trust.

It might be helpful to think of this task as an investigative news report. When a news reporter receives a tip about a controversial plot, they visit the scene and begin asking questions and investigating the evidence. The reporter puts the pieces together to create a truthful story.

This is similar to the process you follow when writing a research paper. When a student does this type of task thoroughly, he gathers information about a specific problem or topic, analyzes the information, and presents all the information gathered in a report.

Why do students fear these assignments?

A research paper is not just a written assignment; It is a action Task that must be completed over time. There are many steps to take:

  • Go to the library
  • Explore a topic
  • Narrow your subject
  • Gather your research
  • Development of a thesis
  • Write a paper
  • Edit paper
  • Proofreading the paper
  • Writing a bibliography or reference list
  • Formatting the paper

What is a thesis?

The thesis is a central message that is summarized in one sentence. This work describes the purpose of the paper, whether it answers a question or highlights a new point. The final declaration is usually at the end of the introductory paragraph.

What does a final declaration look like?

A thesis in a history paper could look like this:

In colonial Georgia, it was not poverty that drove citizens to abandon young settlements and flee to Charleston, but rather the insecurity that citizens felt when they lived so close to Florida, Spain.

This is a bold statement that requires some evidence. The student would need to provide quotes from early Georgia and other evidence to argue this thesis.

What does a research paper look like?

Your finished paper could look like a long essay, or it could look different - it could be divided into sections; It all depends on the type of study being conducted. A science paper looks different from a literature paper.

Articles written for a science class often feature an experiment that a student performed or a problem that the student solved. Because of this, the paper may have sections that are divided by headings and sub-headings, such as summary, method, materials, and more.

In contrast, a literature paper is more concerned with a theory about the point of view of a particular author or describes a comparison of two pieces of literature. This type of paper would take the form of a long essay with a list of references on the last page.

Your teacher will tell you which writing style to use.

What is a writing style?

There are very specific rules for writing and formatting papers, according to standards of research ethics and based on the paper style you are writing. A common style is the Modern Language Association (MLA) style used for literature and some social sciences.

Another is the American Psychological Association (APA) style, and this style is used in the social and behavioral sciences. Turabian style is used for writing history papers, although college professors may require MLA for history assignments. Students may first encounter Turabian or APA style requirements in college. The Scientific Journal Style is often used for scientific tasks.

Please refer to a "Style Guide" for details on writing and formatting your paper. The guide includes details such as:

  • How to format your title page (if you need a title page)
  • Where should the page numbers be placed?
  • How to cite your sources
  • How and when to use attachments
  • How and when to use images
  • How to format the list of sources

What does it mean to "cite sources"?

When you do research, you will find evidence in books, articles, websites, and other sources that you use in support of your thesis. Every time you use some information that you have gathered, you need to make it visible in your paper. You will do this with an in-text quote or footnote. The way you cite your source will depend on the type of writing you are using. However, the quote contains a combination of the author's name, the title of the source, and a page number.

Do you always need a bibliography?

On the last page of your paper is a list of all the sources that you used when putting together your paper. This list can have many names: it can be referred to as a bibliography, reference list, work list consulted or work list cited. Your instructor will tell you which writing style to use for your research. Your style guide has all of the details you need to put the right pieces in place.
