Whoopi Goldberg blames herself for three failed marriages saying, 'I tried it but it wasn't for me'
Whoopi Goldberg tied the knot three times because she thought it was 'expected' of her.
The 63-year-old co-hostess of ABC's The View was married to Alvin Martin between 1973 and 1979, with whom she shares her actress-producer daughter Alexandrea, 46.
The comedienne was also wed to cinematographer David Claessen between 1986 and 1988 and union organizer Lyle Trachtenberg between 1994 and 1995.
Speaking out: Whoopi Goldberg took the stage on Stonewall Day, June 28, in NYC. She revealed in the New York Times magazine July 3 that her three failed marriages were her fault
But she has insisted they never worked out because she couldn't 'share' things with them.
'Look, people expect you to have a boyfriend. They expect you to get married, 'the Ghost actress told the New York Times magazine on July 3.
'So I kept trying to do that, but I didn't want to share information with somebody else. I didn't want anybody asking me why I was doing what I was doing, or to have to make the other person feel better, 'she said.
'But if you're in a relationship, you have to do those things, and it took me a while to figure out that I didn't want to.

Family snap: The now 63-year-old The View hostess in 1986 with David and Alexandrea, now 46, her daughter with first husband Alvin Martin to whom she was married from 1973 to 1979
'I’d be thinking, why don’t I feel the thing that I’m supposed to?
'Then one day I thought: I don't have to do this. I don't have to conform. I tried marriage, and it wasn't for me. You can't be in a marriage because everybody’s expecting you to. '
Whoopi confessed she feels responsible for her three failed marriages as she hadn't been 'really in love' with her spouses, so just wasn't committed to making their relationships work.
Husband No. 3: Whoopi and union organizer Lyle Trachtenberg, who were married between 1994 and 1995. She blames all her failed marriages on herself saying she 'wasn't really in love'
She said: 'It took me some time but I realized that trying to turn myself in to something I wasn't ready for, for a man wasn't his fault. It was mine.
'My marriages failed and I was the common denominator. My commitment was never that strong. I can say now that I was never really in love.
'The realization freed me up. I love men and men love me. I'm lucky that way. I just feel bad that it took me so long to realize that I wasn't meant to be in a relationship. '
She has also dated former James Bond actor Timothy Dalton from 1990 until 1991 and Ted Danson from 1992 until 1994.
Holding court: The View's grande dame talked about her lack of commitment to the men in her life in an interview with The New York Times magazine on Wednesday
